The trailer of Aamir Khan's much-anticipated film Sitaare Zameen Par was finally released on Tuesday, after multiple delays, marking the superstar’s return to cinema after three years. While many of his fans were thrilled, a significant section of netizens took to social media to express disappointment — accusing the movie of being a frame-by-frame copy of the Spanish film Champions.
The sports drama, directed by RS Prasanna, is said to be a spiritual sequel to the 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par, which was also headlined and produced by Aamir Khan. Despite high expectations, the trailer has sparked a backlash online with viewers calling out its lack of originality and emotional depth.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, "Copy frame by frame... Sitaare Zameen Par , he has nothing new to offer? SHAME!" Another comment read, "#SitaareZameenPar is a copy paste of Spanish movie Champions." The criticism extended to Aamir Khan’s performance too, with a user remarking, “Aamir Khan is called a perfectionist after doing scene to scene copy... there is only one SHAH RUKH KHAN!”
The trailer was initially scheduled to be released on May 1, but was postponed due to the Pahalgam attack. Later, the release was rescheduled for May 8, but the trailer was delayed once again following escalations in the India-Pakistan conflict. It finally dropped on May 14, much to the anticipation — and criticism — of audiences.
Despite the online trolling, Aamir’s loyal fanbase continues to back him and is hopeful that the film will win hearts when it releases on June 20, 2025. Industry insiders believe that the negative buzz may die down once the full movie is out and audiences get to experience the complete narrative and performances.
